President's Message

Hello SOHL Members of the 2020-21 Season,

I would like to welcome everybody, especially our new players and hope we all have a safe and enjoyable season. I am very excited that our Afternoon League is in its second year .... Great work Steve, Don and Guy!

Before, I go any further, let's get right to the point. This is going to be a challenging year with Covid-19 and the safeguards we need to follow. We've worked closely with the Management at Southdale C.C. and agreed to follow the guidelines we are given. Below are a few of the directives we need to adhere to;

  • Always wear a mask while in the building except when you are playing.
  • Follow strict hand hygiene (hand washing and sanitizer dispensers) before and after games. Hand-shaking is not allowed and some members have concerns about fist pumping. With that in mind, we can do a "no touch fist pump" OR a "stick tap on the shin pad".
  • Come to your game between 15 - 30 minutes before scheduled and plan to vacate the dressing room 30 minutes after. At times staff may limit this to 20 minutes and possibly prohibit showers.
  • Captains will be responsible for screening their players. "If any player experiences any cold or flu-like symptoms, including; fever, cough, sore throat, respiratory illness, or difficulty breathing .... Stay Home".

I or your Captains will pass along any future updates relating to Covid-19.

From last year's season, I would like to congratulate Steve Corrigal as the recipient of the "Terry Pottinger Award". (Trophy is Awarded Annually to the person who most represents what our League Encompasses (Good Sportsmanship and Comradery) - Voted by all Members of the League. One other note about Steve, he just recently stepped down as Secretary of SOHL and I would like to thank him for his many years of commitment to that position. Martin Robinson has agreed to perform this function until our next AGM ... thanks Martin!

I would also like to congratulate Pat Curtis, Derrick Thurston and Tod Niblock for receiving the "President's Award". (Awarded to an active or retired member(s) of the league. This award is granted to an individual(s) who has shown enthusiasm throughout the season, and has taken on tasks voluntarily). Well-deserved gentlemen!

Just two more items members of the Executive asked that I pass along;

  • Please do not flick the puck out or your defensive zone. Move the puck up the boards or the middle. We have had a few close calls over the last couple of years and we need to be more careful when clearing the zone.
  • Please do not cut hard towards the net. There have been a few run-ins with goalies getting hurt and the referee's will call the play down.

These are challenging times and it is important that everyone do their part in keeping everyone safe. It is my hope that we can have a fun / full year of hockey.

Best Regards and Stay Safe,
Bill Wrublowsky
